When the Grand Canyon trip was over, the Petersons and I went to see the Annual Social Dance in the Hopi Reservation. We took 89S and then 264E to the Second Mesa where the festivities took place in their kivas. All the Hopis and cute children wore traditional costume, lots of turquoise jewelry, fox hides attached to mens behind, women with cut-out symbol boards on their head. They all danced behind one another in a circle to the sound of drums and men chanting. Wow,with the indians and the mesas, the buttes, the big sun and that sandy arid desert I thought I was in a foreign country.Worth a trip

(continuation of trip). We slept on fine sandy beaches. Each got a tent but because it was so warm most slept on a small mattress under the stars. We had full moon and the shadows and lights it cast on the massive surrounding rocks was gorgeous. The firmament was incredible, the brilliance and the multitude of stars made you reflect on the colossal greatness of the universe. Dear thoughts of Andre and our discussions of the cosmos. The food, the beer, the people were great. Flawless execution of boatsmen. An helicopter picked us up at the bottom and a plane brought us back to Marble Canyon.

With Hatch River expeditions we left Lee's Ferry monday am Aug.25 and returned to Marble Canyon on Sunday Sept1.It had stormed the night before and the water was milk chocolate brown, full with sand. Bizarre.Water is a constant 52F.Except for first rainy day the weather was gorgeous. Trip's leader was John Warme, a geologist prof from CSM and 2/3's of the 32 people were geologists. Got my first lessons in the geology of the G.C. Pretty cool. We had 2 motored boats. Did 188 miles. Rapids were awesome when you sit in the "bathtub" or on the pontoons. Hermit and Lava Falls were exhilirating.
