Canyon de Chelly N.Mon.

I love Canyon de Chelly, situated in Navajo Reservation, not well known but well worth. I find it intimate because Navajo Indians are still living and working in the fertile valley- due to the stream. The only drawback is that one needs a guide to visit the canyon floor. Next time I rent a horse with a guide. That would be fun! I took the only one trail that is open for the public: White House Ruins.Wonderful 800ft descent: 2.5 miles round trip, steep, rocky thru tunnels, cacti, lizards. Anasazi(the ancient ones)built their houses on ledges above the canyon floor.the 500ft sheer cliff is awesome.

When the Grand Canyon trip was over, the Petersons and I went to see the Annual Social Dance in the Hopi Reservation. We took 89S and then 264E to the Second Mesa where the festivities took place in their kivas. All the Hopis and cute children wore traditional costume, lots of turquoise jewelry, fox hides attached to mens behind, women with cut-out symbol boards on their head. They all danced behind one another in a circle to the sound of drums and men chanting. Wow,with the indians and the mesas, the buttes, the big sun and that sandy arid desert I thought I was in a foreign country.Worth a trip

Negro Bill Canyon Trail

With Cristine and Pete Peterson hiked the popular Negro Bill Canyon trail situated east near Moab town. Not difficult.4 M round trip, takes 4 hours and fun is crossing several times little stream. Slippery and you can get lost. At the end of 2 miles one arrives at the Morning Glory Natural Bridge, 243ft arch, 6th longest in the States. Interesting wonder of nature, created by water and wind.Sandstone.We slept 2 nights in a B&B,owners a belgian couple. From there we continued on Rte 163 South passing some great landscapes: ate in Bluff, and especially Monument Valley arriving from East is momentous

(continuation of trip). We slept on fine sandy beaches. Each got a tent but because it was so warm most slept on a small mattress under the stars. We had full moon and the shadows and lights it cast on the massive surrounding rocks was gorgeous. The firmament was incredible, the brilliance and the multitude of stars made you reflect on the colossal greatness of the universe. Dear thoughts of Andre and our discussions of the cosmos. The food, the beer, the people were great. Flawless execution of boatsmen. An helicopter picked us up at the bottom and a plane brought us back to Marble Canyon.

With Hatch River expeditions we left Lee's Ferry monday am Aug.25 and returned to Marble Canyon on Sunday Sept1.It had stormed the night before and the water was milk chocolate brown, full with sand. Bizarre.Water is a constant 52F.Except for first rainy day the weather was gorgeous. Trip's leader was John Warme, a geologist prof from CSM and 2/3's of the 32 people were geologists. Got my first lessons in the geology of the G.C. Pretty cool. We had 2 motored boats. Did 188 miles. Rapids were awesome when you sit in the "bathtub" or on the pontoons. Hermit and Lava Falls were exhilirating.

Went with Antje and El to La Jolla Music Society's Summerfest. Memorable chamber music evening, which I will never forget: Ravel's sonata in G min. for violin and piano, Bartok's Contrasts and Brahms' string sextet in G Major. Anne-Marie McDermott expressive. Jimmy Lin excellent. I find La Jolla Summerfest the best in the country. Located near the center of La Jolla (for dinner),everything is superior: the elegance of the players, a well designed program, the concert hall is intimate, the audience extremely well dressed and appreciative. For those who love classical music, this is a must event.

60 miles west from Idaho Falls on rte 20 I camped in a most bizarre place called Craters of the Moon,a national monument. Long fissures across the Great Rift spew up lava thru so-called Spatter Cones- miniature volcanoes-only 15000 yrs ago. and created this vast surface which is black, like coal. You think you're on the moon. There is a 7 mile carloop with stops for hiking.Went to the top of Inferno Cone and Spatter Cones. The camping is great, very quiet and this gigantic moon in the night with super bright stars really wondrous. So if you happen to pass by this stark place, camp there.

Took the gondola and hiked from there (9,095ft) to the top of rendez-vous mountain,3 miles one way, took me 2 hours,1500ft denivellation. easy climb but at midday it was hot; badly burned my shoulders and neck. Bring lots to drink. At the summit is Corbet Cabin, normally open but somehow management decided to close in summer because lack of visitors. Sad.I was all alone up and back down only crossed 2 fathers with sons who went camping on top. Teton Village is paradise for solo paragliders and tandems. Also balloon flying early in the morning. Mangy Moose: good bar to hang out and meet guys.

spent 4 days on Kauai. Rented nr.825 in Nihi Kai Villas in Poipu.Sleeps 4.nice grounds for the money. $400/night.view of pacific, mountains, clean, not dark. full kitchen. tennis courts and pleasant swimming pool. Went on 1 hr helicopter tour with Kauai Air out of Lihue.219$. Wished I flew out of Port Allen to avoid leaving and returning over disappointing flat area of Kauai. Magnificent Waimea Canyon, Na Pali Coast- looking in from sea and inside walls. Circling around waterfalls of Waialeale Crater. Request that they fly in canyons, not on top. Sat right to pilot. Best seat, somewhat scary.

Dillon: 9000 ft high, surrounded by snowy fourteeners. One hour drive from Denver.Went sailing on Joe's boat. Takes an hour to sail from Dillon marina to Frisco's, where they have added nice anchor additions to their marina. Ate in Frisco at the newly built eating place next to the lake. Bad, bad food, only drink a beer. Took 10 mile round bike trip along the shores of the lake Dillon-Frisco- Dillon. Mellow and easy. In spring/summer is cool. Love biking in the high country.
