TGU Airport

Experience

This was one of the scariest landings ever. The airport is nestled in the mountains of central Honduras, and the runway is SHORT. So much that the pilot on landing felt he didn't have enough space and so we did a 'relift' right as we were about to land, followed immediately by a sharp bank to avoid the mountains. SCARY as hell.

Stayed at the Marriot and went windsurfing for a week. WOW! Beautiful beaches, and the conditions are fantastic for windsurfing. Be careful though, the winds can be strong and they consistently blow offshore. Harness and waterstarting are valuable skills, but not absolutely necessary if you stay closer in to the shore.

Afternoon dive here because conditions too choppy outside of reef. Didn't go out in the morning also because surf too strong to exit the channel. Saw at least 4 huge green morays. On return over grassy shallows, a large barracuda + a moray staring each other down. Very cool. Snorkeled w/ nurse sharks and stingrays after the dive.

Night dive; enjoyed it more than the last time here due to great dive master. Dive is very shallow though, always having to watch buoyancy is a bit of a hassle. Lots to see: 2 small octopi, roaming lobster, 2 crabs, large stingrays (~3-4), tarpon feeding!, sleeping parrotfish, conches, small shrimp. NOTE: see previous Hol Chan post for a freedraw map of the dive site.

Half Moon Wall/ The Aquarium

Experience

Repeatability

Two afternoon dives after the Blue Hole. Both nice wall dives, especially Half Moon Wall. The post-blue hole surface interval is great as you go to an atoll with the unique red-footed booby bird observatory. Underwater: Eagle rays (5!), crab in large sponge, green moray, about 3' long.

The Blue Hole

Experience

Second trip to the Blue Hole was almost as spectacular as the first; but no sharks rising from the bottom this time. Explored deeper in underhang at 130' depth. The day trip (3 dives, including the Blue Hole and two others on Lighthouse reef) costs ~$130. Well worth it. What a cool dive.

Awesome drop right into schools of nurse sharks. Sharks were around 4-5' length. A large grouper also hangs out there. At 65' depth, there is an impressive tunnel to swim through.

Dropped into sandy plain, and waited with El. Then down shallow canyons. Reminded me of Honduras. Saw: small moray, large lobster.

Ambergris is really not an ideal place for windsurfing, because the wind blows from the wrong direction and is gusty. Also not very all that pretty from the beaches there, although there's a lot of rentals available.

From Roseau taxi drove us North to Portsmouth(2 hrs drive) and dropped us off at Cabrits Dive Center, now managed by sympathetic british couple. Wife is great, told us where to eat and to sleep. (not much choice around Portsmouth). Divecenter is 10 min. drive from water but they take care of everything.Nobody around just four of us on a small diveboat to two favorite sites :"Toucari Caves". Caves are located from 20 to 5ft.Once above caves you swim in our own bubbles. Second dive "Shark's Mouth" no sharks but some formations which ressemble sharks. Interesting fishlive. It's worth the trip.
