 I love Canyon de Chelly,situated in Navajo Reservation,not well known but well worth. I find it intimate because Navajo Indians are still living and working in the fertile valley- due to the stream. The only drawback is that one needs a guide to visit the canyon floor. Next time I rent a horse with a guide. That would be fun! I took the only one trail that is open for the public: White House Ruins.Wonderful 800ft descent: 2.5 miles round trip,steep, rocky thru tunnels, cacti,lizards. Anasazi(the ancient ones)built their houses on ledges above the canyon floor.the 500ft sheer cliff is awesome.

Negro Bill Canyon Trail

 With Cristine and Pete Peterson hiked the popular Negro Bill Canyon trail situated east near Moab town.Not difficult.4 M round trip,takes 4 hours and fun is crossing several times little stream. Slippery and you can get lost. At the end of 2 miles one arrives at the Morning Glory Natural Bridge, 243ft arch, 6th longest in the States. Interesting wonder of nature,created by water and wind.Sandstone.We slept 2 nights in a B&B,owners a belgian couple. From there we continued on Rte 163 South passing some great landscapes: ate in Bluff,and especially Monument Valley arriving from East is momentous

 Took the gondola and hiked from there (9,095ft) to the top of rendez-vous mountain,3 miles one way, took me 2 hours,1500ft denivellation. easy climb but at midday it was hot; badly burned my shoulders and neck. Bring lots to drink. At the summit is Corbet Cabin,normally open but somehow management decided to close in summer because lack of visitors. Sad.I was all alone up and back down only crossed 2 fathers with sons who went camping on top. Teton Village is paradise for solo paragliders and tandems. Also balloon flying early in the morning. Mangy Moose: good bar to hang out and meet guys.

Sleeping Giant Park

 Took the dog again to hike up sleeping giant. Entrance across the street from Quinnipiac College in Hamden Ct. Nice wide, winding gravel trail to the top (about 30-45 min) where there is a small castle and clearing. Took a marked trail through the woods back. Got a little lost but found our way back no problem when we hit a road.

Chatfield Hollow St Park

 Took the dog and went on a short hike at Chatfield Hollow park (Killingworth - off Rte 80). Actually more of a long walk around the paved parts of the park. Trails were muddy due to recent rain. Beautiful day. A little crowded since it was opening day for fishing and the streams/lakes were just stocked with trout (i think).

 This is a really nice hike on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Get there by taking Del Mar Heights Exit off the 5, drive to the end, then go south a bit along the beach and park at the base of the park. There's a very nice route that takes you down to the beach for the walk back to the parking lot.

Coral Pink Dunes Park

 East of I 15 S in southern Utah in Kanab lays is wonderful park : Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. It's of the beaten path.Short detour on way to Zion or Las Vegas. Elevation 6,000 ft. We were there in February, cold, windy, rainy, lonely. Not a soul. Wonderfully alone. The sand really looks coral/pink. Some mighty high ridged dunes . You can walk everywhere. Apparently it is an ATV paradise (in summer I suppose) because it is more than 3500 acres big. Rik and I trekked through the vast expanse. We thought we were in a film of Lawrence of Arabia. (On our way to the El's and Antje's wedding)

 near Hanksville, Sth of I 70W. A must- see smallish park and kids love it. A phantasmagorical place. Wind and water carved pinkish brown rocks of all heights, ressembling goblins. We spent walking a few hours in this playground among these bizarre hooded creatures and climbed the lower ones. In the afternoon we did a wonderful hike "Slot Canyon" (5 miles) where at some places you have to squeeze through narrow passages.We were there in May. Few people. Camping on site- all commodities- is better than in a hotel. Gorgeous evening sun. merci mon grand chou pour une magnifique nuit!

 Pierrot and I loved visiting Colorado Nat. Monument,because it is small,rugged with few visitors who bypass this little treasure on their way to Moab or Canyon Lands in Utah. Enter the park by car east in Grand Junction. It's a mighty high narrow 23 mile route with dramatic look-outs. Near the visitor centre the trail you have to do is Monument Canyon Trail, 6 miles in toto, first mile steep descent -not difficult-, the rest beautiful walk at the bottom of canyon. Admire Coke Ovens monoliths, around the 3 mile corner the Kissing Couple Rock and Independence Rock. Great vista camping on premise

 This is a must hike/climb in Zion. three quarters of the hike is a switchback paved road moving up in controlled elevation.Last section (1/3 mile)continues amongst boulders and fixed rope. Pay attention where you place your feet. It's airy. Not for those who are afraid of heights. At top grandiose view of the valley, especially before sunset.Most intimate moment with my buddy Pierre whose spirit remains eternally in Zion's Wonder. 1,500 ft denivellation. 4 hours walk. bring water along. Called serious hike/climb for healthy walker. Go out of season because less crowds. Fun camping in park.
